Ingrid Meeting Rick Steves

One of the luckiest moments in my long career as a private tour guide was the day I met Rick Steves. Not many people here in France know him, but I had heard his name from a number of my tour guests. Many of them came on my tours carrying one of Rick Steves’s Guide Books. I was impressed by how many of the “secret places” of our area they already knew about thanks to his guides.

Prior to meeting Rick, I had already guided some of his travel groups around Monaco. During one of the guided walking tours, I had the pleasure to have Steve Smith, the author of the French editions in my group. In his eyes I had successfully passed the test as a guide, and he decided to add my name in all 4 of the Rick Steves’s guide books that reference Nice and the French Riviera. These are “Europe”; “France”; “Provence and the French Riviera” and, “The Cruise Ports of the Mediterranean”.

2 years later, Rick Steves came to visit Nice in order to update one of his books. It was on this occasion that he chose my services to assist him and to provide him with local expertise.

It is now the sixth year that I have been referenced in his guide books. Most recently I have been included in his new guide book –  “Nice and the French Riviera”. During this time I have had the pleasure of guiding many of his passionate readers.

Thanks Rick, I am proud to be part of your team in France!

The Port of Antibes

During my bike ride today I made a stop in the port of Antibes and watched the fishermen bringing their catch to shore. It makes me happy to see that in the middle of all the exclusive yachts that dock there, you can still see some authentic local activity going on. A long time ago …

Sanremo

About 20 miles East of Nice ends the French Riviera and begins the Italian Riviera or like we also call it the Flower Riviera. On the highway a big board greets the visitors with “Benvenuti in Italia” which means Welcome to Italy. Once you pass the border, it is amazing how the landscape changes. While …

Liberation, my favorite market

Nice is mostly known for its famous flower and food market on Cours Saleya in the old town. It is mentioned in all the guide books and you will have no difficulty in finding it, just follow the flow. If you look for a more authentic market though, where the locals go and buy their …

Queen Victoria discovering the French Riviera

It was in the spring of 1882 that Queen Victoria visited the French Riviera for the first time. She had previously visited Paris with her husband Prince Albert. However, his death prompted her to enter a long period of mourning and it was many years before she revisited France. Queen Victoria had never travelled outside …
