Located in one of the most beautiful bays of France, Villefranche-sur-Mer is definitely one of my favorite places on the French Riviera. Its ochre-colored houses and charming narrow alleys remind us of its Italian past when the region was still under the government of the House of Savoy. Villefranche used to be a fishing village and even though you can still see some fishing activity in the Bay, nowadays you will see many more sailing and motor boats and very often also large cruise ships anchoring in the very deep waters of the bay.
We locals love above all the beaches of Villefranche, in the summer for swimming and sunbathing and in the winter for picnics. The crystal-clear water of the Sea and the beautiful hills around the Bay are the perfect setting for a relaxing moment.
And in the evening, there is nothing more romantic than dining in one of the outdoor Restaurants on the water front. The best fish dishes are served at the legendary Restaurant La Mère Germaine, a family run place which has a story linked to History. In the 1960s Germaine used to welcome the marines of the US-Navy ships which anchored for long years in the Bay. With her warm and caring way, she became like a mother to these boys far away from home. They called her fondly Mom Germaine, in French Mère Germaine. She has been honored several times by the US Navy for her qualities and even though she is long gone, her daughter and husband have kept the name and the reputation.
There are plenty of reasons why a visit of Villefranche is a Must while being on the French Riviera, la dolce vita in French style.
