Socca

The Socca is THE most iconic speciality of Nice. Made of simple ingredients like chickpea flour, olive oil, water, and salt, it is cooked in a large, round copper pan in wood-fired ovens and served hot, sprinkled with a bit of black pepper. It was originally served as a staple food to workers as a quick and filling meal, rich in protein.

The history of Socca can be traced back to ancient times, as chickpeas have been cultivated in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. The dish that looks like a pancake is similar to other Mediterranean chickpea-based flatbreads, like the Italian farinata or the Spanish torta de garbanzo.

It remains popular today, often eaten as a snack while strolling along the Promenade des Anglais or as a casual appetizer in local restaurants. One of the best Soccas in town is served at “MariThé” on Cours Saleya or at “Chez Pippo”, enjoy it with a glass of local Rosé wine during your next visit to Nice. Bon appétit!
